The storehouse/bridal suite

  • The oldest standing building Sandtorgholmen is storehouse. It is the only building that has survived the four fires that have ravaged Sandtorgholmen. The legend says it has spiritual protection.

This stems from a story in the early 1800s when there was famine in Norway and large parts of the world. Even so, the wealth was great at Sandtorgholmen. The wife of Rasmus Christensen, Maren Marie, shared willingly food to the indigent, but there was an old woman as she was not allowed to give food to because she was a witch. Maren Marie felt sorry for the wife and also gave her food behind her husbands back. The woman was so touched over Maren Maries kindness that she proclaimed; there has already been a big fire on the island, but three more fires are to come and this storehouse is to be the only not to perish.

The story is so far correct. Three more fires came, the last in 1916, and no one can properly understand that the storehouse did not burn down, as it stood at the core of all the other buildings that burned. Today we have rehabilitated it as a great "bridal suite" where we hope it brings good luck on the journey to the newlyweds. In writing, stabburet has guested 69 newlyweds - and all are still married!
